(Xiao Zhan’s first solo album, titled WM in English, translates from the Chinese name 《我们》, which means “We” or “Us”. This title reflects a deep connection between Xiao Zhan and his fans, emphasizing shared emotions, experiences, and growth. The initials WM stand for “We and Me,” symbolizing the bond he shares with his listeners, blending both collective and personal perspectives.)

Album Cover Concept

The singer holds a piece of red fabric, symbolizing warmth and connecting the unseen threads of emotion between “us.” The red imprint on the cover extends beyond the letterforms and layout crafted from red lines, breaking the flat surface’s boundaries and flowing with emotion, as if opening a layered map of memories. The cover attempts to gently convey the singer’s warmth to the audience, blurring spatial boundaries and drawing them closer. Through each note carrying emotion, listeners become a part of the “us.”

Visually, the red lines interweave to form the letters “W” and “M,” representing the interplay between “I” and “we.” Each twist signifies the subtle but undeniable connections of inner emotions. The thick lines resemble a childhood cassette tape, its movement evoking the tape’s rotation. A red shadow cast against a slightly gray wall symbolizes the traces each person’s experiences leave in space and time.

The album WM includes ten tracks, each one a winding path exploring different facets of the “self” and mapping hidden, flowing emotional trails between people. The unfolding, twisting lines represent the layers and fluctuations of emotions, embedding each note in a dynamic, irregular emotional honeycomb. This is a chronicle of feelings, recorded in the present as small memory markers suspended in the tunnel of time.

Album Introduction

WM features 10 tracks, delving into experiences of “I,” “you,” “they,” and every individual’s emotional journey through life and human connections in the vastness of the city.

Each track tells a different story of the “self” as it encounters and explores a range of emotions and insights. Some emotions may be subtle and easily overlooked, while others are complex and challenging to express, contributing to a multi-dimensional, shared human experience. The album offers a space where familiar emotions can resonate, inviting listeners to freely experience this emotional flow. It allows for a full range of feelings, encouraging listeners to smile when happy, avoid tears when sad, and find meaning even in solitude. The album invites an acceptance of all emotions—joy, sorrow, loneliness, despair, pain, and confusion—and suggests observing, experiencing, and witnessing these emotions without avoidance, embracing one’s true, complex self.

We are all observers and unique experimenters in the world. As distinct individuals, we navigate this undefinable, ever-changing world, balancing individuality with connection. Most of us move through cities of steel and concrete, meeting people and exploring. Time only moves forward, bringing intersections, confrontations, and connections, leading us to face some people “face-to-face” and others “back-to-back” as they gradually fade away. While we long for understanding, acceptance, and trust, the outcome often varies. Whether life unfolds as hoped or not, can we maintain our stride, pursue set goals, adjust as needed, and explore new paths?

The album aspires to spark moments of resonance as we connect with ourselves, each other, and the world, helping listeners find an added point of balance, a little more self-acceptance, and peace in the midst of emotional flow.

Song Concepts

“Wild”(我们)
As civilization has advanced, we strive to live by shared morals, stepping carefully, hoping to be the “good person.” Yet in every stage, we inevitably witness life’s myriad faces. How do we maintain resilience and vitality, remaining a true and undefeated “good person”?

“Anonymous”(都一样)
Life’s journey is like a bustling street, where we are all travelers, moving quickly. Disappointments are common, and we may feel lost and alone at times. Yet despite every moment of hesitation or temporary pause, everyone’s worries and joys are “all the same.” After introspection, with a continued spirit of exploration, we must move forward. Rest may come, but the journey continues.

“Return”(还原)
We often shield ourselves with impenetrable armor, hiding vulnerabilities beneath various masks. Behind each facade lies a past of struggle and resilience, hidden scars, and guarded emotions. By confronting our truest feelings and embracing self-acceptance, we can return to our core and become a better “self.”

“Glimmering”(荧)
The glow in the dark, though faint, is a reliable light. Like millions of others, each screen shines a bit of this “firelight,” gradually illuminating a personal world. Through each interaction with the world, we find balance, pursue the unknown, and encourage ourselves amid uncertainty. This song integrates pedals, breathing sounds, and resonant piano tones, echoing a wooden texture, like sparks from burning embers. Even the faintest glow becomes an indispensable light in the darkness, expressing the song’s message: even the smallest spark can light the way.
