#MoDeXianJuHaoKanDreamCrossover# [Director Kong Sheng publishes an article in the People's Daily: How to make the same story fresh and brilliant — From the movie De Xian Jin Zhi to the web feature film Mo De Xian] On December 6, 2025, the movie De Xian Jin Zhi was released. From the initial cut of over 2 hours and 40 minutes down to the theatrical release version, we cut nearly 50 minutes.

Cinema is a ritual. When the audience walks into the theater, they hand over a complete block of time to the creators. We can lay out the plot, hide details, and mobilize various audio-visual means to precisely strike them at a specific moment. But a movie ultimately has a limited duration, and making choices is inevitable.

Giving things up is never an easy task. A lot of content is repeatedly polished starting from the script stage, and when we arrive on set, it is shot bit by bit by the entire crew. Every character, every scene, and every frame condenses the effort of many people. Those compressed parts are not simple deletions; rather, they are the lives and experiences we built around the characters.

After the film's release, many viewers said they wanted to see the content that couldn't appear on the big screen due to runtime constraints. Unexpectedly, this idea was finally realized in the form of a three-episode feature film, which is today's Mo De Xian.

De Xian Jin Zhi and Mo De Xian are not simply a "short-to-long adaptation" or a "spin-off." They originate from the same story, the same shoot, feature the same characters, and carry the same emotions. The difference in length brings a different narrative approach. Building upon the original story, Mo De Xian allows the plot to unfold more fully, letting the audience go further with this group of people and linger a little longer in their world.

The story begins with a river. When the war came, people continuously moved west along the Yangtze River, wandering and displaced. Some fled, some retreated; their identities were different, but their thoughts were mostly the same: survive first, then find a place to settle down. Mo Dexian was originally just a worker who could repair machines; he had a family and a trade, but he was swept up by the war and could never return to his old life.

If the Yangtze River carries the displacement of these people, Gezhi Town carries their hard-won peace. After the fall of Yichang, Mo Dexian's family and a group of refugees came to this small town, settling in a quiet corner. In the intervals of war, his son Dengxian played in the courtyard, his wife Xia Cheng sang while cooking, and the old grandfather planted vegetables and recited poetry. No matter where ordinary people go, as long as there is a place to settle down, they will take root and slowly turn a temporary foothold into a home.

But the war found them here anyway. The unexpected intrusion of three Japanese scouts shattered the tranquility of Gezhi Town. This group of people, who originally just wanted to avoid the flames of war and live a stable life, had to face a question once again: This time, can they still keep running? Mo De Xian gives us more space to present this. From the displacement and fleeing upstream in the first episode, to the shattering of three years of peaceful life in Gezhi Town in the second episode, and finally to the head-on confrontation with the enemy in the third episode, where tanks and Solothurn guns meet on a narrow path... Amidst the increasingly brutal warfare, everyone undergoes changes. Mo Dexian goes from single-mindedly protecting his family to deciding to sacrifice himself to defend Gezhi Town; Xiao Yan goes from fearing and dodging the war to shouldering the responsibilities of a soldier once again; and the ordinary people, who originally only cared about their own lives, gradually stand together to resist. More important than the escalation of the battle scenes is the process of these people transitioning from mere survival to defending their land.

This is exactly what lies behind the four characters of "De Xian Jin Zhi" [Carefully Crafted in Free Time]: it is not only a craftsman's adherence to skill and quality but also the perseverance of ordinary people toward their lives and homes in a great era. Mo De Xian is a continuation of De Xian Jin Zhi.

Some character dynamics and life details that were compressed in the movie are also able to be presented. There are more entanglements between Mo Dexian and Xiao Yan, the daily life during those three years in Gezhi Town is given more ink, and some minor characters who flashed by in the movie also have the chance to leave their own mark. This content, which seems not to directly drive the plot, settles into the weight of the story.

If watching De Xian Jin Zhi in the cinema is a striking experience, then the nearly 3-hour Mo De Xian is more like an immersive journey. It brings the audience into the real era of war, where, amidst the ruthless roar of guns and the thrusts of bayonets, they follow Mo Dexian and the people of Gezhi Town, their blood boiling as they rise up in resistance.

Mo De Xian is the premiere work in the "Ju Hao Kan" large-screen VOD zone. In my understanding, if the characters stand solid, the story makes people believe in it, and when an episode ends, the audience still cares about what will happen to them next—this is the simplest definition of "good to watch."

Over the years, while making drama series, we have also experimented with movies and web feature films. The format is not the goal; what matters is finding the right way to tell it. Some stories are suitable to be told in two hours, while others need more time to slowly unfold. Different formats allow us to continuously learn how to tell stories.

From De Xian Jin Zhi to Mo De Xian, we changed our approach and walked into the world of these characters once again. The length and pacing are somewhat different, but what we always wanted to talk about is that river, that town, and the group of people living within it.
